From Paul Fredric McAtee: This was basically our highschool band. Eric and I were from South East, Jim and Pat were Pius X boys. The band started with Jim and I. He was easily the most talented and the most experienced - he had an older brother or something and had been gigging since he was 12. Along with Randy Krause and Paul Tisdale, Jim was one of the best drummers in Lincoln that I ever knew. And certainly the best I ever worked with. In fact, I don't even bother with drummers anymore - machines are far more reliable.

No one was doing the gothic thing back then. There were older kids doing post-punk stuff, but if you wore black back then it was considered 'wierd'. All the other bands our age were doing hardcore. Eric and I were trying to sound like Bauhaus and Joy Division. Jim and Pat wanted to do the Cult/Metallica thing. We played a couple of shows at the Brickyard. After our first show there, Lori Allison (later from the Millions) came up to Eric and gave him a big hug. We also played outdoors at Jackie Fynbu's birthday party, and once at a vacant Highschool somewhere in the country with Brown Machine. That's where I met Carl Gibson, who years later would do a tour of duty with me in Morphine Angel.

Eventually, senior year ended, and we all went on to college. Jim went to KC Art Institute, so that was it for ODR. For a moment, I thought we were going to have one more show at the Drumstick, but Jim wouldn't be there for it, so I found a Yamaha drum machine and started programming it for back-up. I realized how much I'd learned from Jim. We never did the show, but that's where my interest in electronics and sequencing was born, so I guess I have to thank Jim again for that.

I live in Houston now and am still doing music with Asmodeus X. Jim I heard moved to Seattle and became a big-time Cajun Chef and drummed for a Sub-Pop band. Eric recently returned to Lincoln after much cavorting about the U.S., and I heard Pat became an English Teacher somewhere.

The name "One Dark Rabbit" came from the book/film Watership Down. It's a metaphor for the death that unites all beings. Right there from the beginning I had a penchant for incorporating metaphyisics into my musical themes, a habit that would keep me on the fringe of the Lincoln music scene for years to come ;-)

    Pablo's

Pat Bradley: Pablo's was started by Mike Elsner and Patrick Bradley after drinking two bottles of Boone’s Farm and then writing a song about a picture with a blue bear in it. The original name was "Pattin' Mike" then came a name change and the onslaught of floating and permanent musicians. There was one show where there were twelve people on stage who some of whom I didn't know. I rarely played sober.

    From Bernie McGinn:
The 80's - So many shows at the Brickyard (Surprising that it lasted so long there, especially being across the street from UNL Police!) - and continuing on with shows at the Malone Center. Lots of touring bands in those days. Young and diverse crowd. Looking back on it, it was cool because all the misfit kids banded together, for the most part - whether punk, skater, goth, new waver... whatever. Also, keep in mind that being different, a punk, a skateboarder, anything not mainstream was very threatening to people then. You would get yelled at/threatened pretty frequently for looking/acting out of the ordinary.

From Johnny Smith (of Born Deprived): Positive Aggression became "PeAye" when a band from the southeastern USA (possibly S.Carolina, I can't remember now but I know that I still have the magazine with the record review in it) released a 7" under the name "Positive Aggression". The Lincoln band was definitely not straight edge and didn't want people to confuse them with the other band so they changed their name.

From Malcom Miles on shows that stand out in his memory - 5) The five slot goes to ALL hardworking local bands over the years including: Lullaby for the Working Class, Leafy Green Things, Bright Eyes, Self Righteous Brothers, Opium Taylor, The Faint, Roosevelt Franklin, 13 Nightmares, Plastik Trumpet, Simon Joyner, Hour Slave, GIO, For Against, Drive by Honkey, Joe Buck, Luck of Aleia, Rosebud, The Sissies, TV City, The Black Dahlias, Darktown House Band, Picknee, Pablo's Triangle

    4) The 3 or 4 times I was lucky enough to catch Middle Monkey. Hearing "I Drink" still makes me smile. Eric grooving that bassline live and me lifting my beer, singing "I drink because I'm lonely, I drink because it's there"

    3) Any of a dozen or more Mercy Rule shows. I knew there was something excellent going on in Lincoln the first time I looked upon the spotlit trio, their shadows wavering 20 foot high behind them, the blast of sound tearing through the room. "Tell tomorrow I‘ve been thinking. Tell tomorrow I've been dreaming. Tell tomorrow I'll be right here."

    2) Any of a hundred Millions shows. From the early quartet playing sparse, dark rock in a nearly empty room with plenty of space to dance to the packed out later shows with brighter, fuller songs. "When's the last time you said something you meant? When's the last time you meant something you said?"

    1) New Brass Guns, the first local band that ever caught my ear and made me realize that you didn't have to be from someplace else to be a damn good band. I recall distinctly the first show I saw them play. Lori twirled off the stage, danced through the bar side of Duffy's and then back to the stage. Such brave, inspired living. "Do what you want to do because you want to do it, don't let people influence you to the point where you have to cry."

Just some people playing music but it changed my life.

Moved back to Lincoln and began playing with local guys on bass and drums. We had big plans, but Albright couldn’t stand being away from his favorite city: s.f.,ca.

Richard Rebarber's list of essential Lincoln releases:

  • Mercy Rule - "Flat Black Chronicles" - Although it was barely released, I think this is the best sounding record ever to come out of a Lincoln band (including Saddle Creek, but not including Matthew Sweet), and one of the best from a songwriting point of view as well.
  • 13 Nightmares "Shitride" - I'm sure everyone over 35 or so is mentioning "Shitride".

Richard Rebarber is currently in Floating Opera

From Eric Hallstrom: In between Rocking Horse and Water, after Kurt had quit Rocking Horse and we were looking for a new drummer, we did a one-off show as “Hoarse” with a very young (maybe 14 yrs. Old) Ben Armstrong as our drummer. We practiced a couple times and played a show in Grand Island that had already been scheduled.

In Addition to Roosevelt Franklin, Colby was formerly a member of Pablo's Triangle and The GC3 and currently plays with Bobby Conn in Chicago

From Kevin Gregorius: Roosevelt Franklin also had a 2 or 3-song demo tape recorded before “Dining Out...”, before Shannon Dobson came on as vocalist. As I recall, John Wolcott (James’ brother) was the original vocalist, who took a backseat and decided to produce and write the songs. Towards the end, John also ended up playing guitar in the band

             Eric Bemberger - guitar
    Releases:
    Members came from: Caffiend
    Members went to: Blandine Cosima

From Eric Hallstrom: After Caffiend broke up, which was probably because of me, we started up RR 134. I had a pattern of quitting my bands, but I was actually kicked out of RR 134. They replaced me with Eric Bemberger, who was a better guitarist than I was in the first place. The Rural Route 134 song that appeared on the Novelty Yellow compellation was recorded with me. We recorded several other songs at that session too, but I don’t know where they are or if they ever made it on another album.

From Kevin Gregorius: And that’s a damn shame. I forced – yes, forced – Rob Walters to go see the first RR134 show @ the Commonplace and it blew – yes, blew – his mind (mine too).

From Eric Hallstrom: I think Dan Shoemaker was in Sawhorse. I recall Phil telling me this when I said I thought they were the greatest band I ever saw at a Common Place show at age 16. I purchased this 4x10 Marshall Speaker Cabinet that Dan Shoemaker used from Phil. It was the one he used in Sawhorse, I think. Sawhorse may be part of the reason we named our first band Rocking Horse. The speaker cabinet had the Ls from “Marshall” broken off, and we called it “Marsha"

    Settle For Less
L-R: Chris, Brent, Pat, Brant, BradV, not pictured...Brad H

From: Chris N: settleforless was a ska-punk-core band formed in Grand Island in the summer of 99, and later moved to Lincoln. They mostly played Lincoln and Omaha, frequenting the then bustling Cog Factory. One of the original suckapunch bands, settleforless was geared towards the younger all ages crowds. Brent Heath moving away to college and Brad moving to Cali basically threw the band in a downward spiral trying to cover for them. Chris moved to trombone and 2 different guitar players were tried for awhile to no avail until Elliott took over in 2003. Eventually Brad moved home, and the band moved forward, trying to incorporate some more folk/irish influence in the music. Somewhere in 2003 a decision was made to scrap the ska routine and go the route of the growing folk punk genre. Joy joined the band, Ben Swift eventually took over on drums, and Chris Moved to accoustic guitar, and pat to accordion. Only a few shows were played under this lineup Differences in opinions on band direction led Brant, Joy and Elliott to quit the band. Chris, Brad, Ben, and Pat decided to move on and formed 'the killigans' with new bass, fiddle, and electric guitar players.

    Shinyville's bio reads as follows:
The organism evolves. It dies and gives birth to itself, forgets its prior lives and recalls them in a flash of sulfurous intuition. Shinyville manifests currently as an eight-year experiment in engineered ur-reality, transubstantiating tones into sermons, handcuffs into decorative lizards, and denial into expectations.

"Most religions of the past have failed by expecting Nature to conform with their ideals of proper conduct." Not here, mates. Life creates a launching pad for the Geist by engineering a thousand near-deaths. The equinox of the gods refracts the twilight of the idols. Become an infant in our infantry, a baby in the New Babylonian Imminence Corps. We will meet every soldier with an endless supply of hunchbacks, each handcrafted in bronze and blood.

Shinyville is a cult. Shinyville is a secret society. Shinyville is at once apolitical and revolutionary. Shinyville is a formula for the promotion of epilepsy, schizophrenia, and tripolar disorder. Shinyville isn't an injection of counter-culture into your jugular.

The Day-Glo Mass seeks to eviscerate our sexuality, our nationality, our gender, our humanity. The footprint of a lost value arrives looking like the symbol of infinity, suspicions of paranoia inspired by patterns in the static. Rain turns to snow under the last streetlight of ambition.

You speak to me thus: "To stare into the abyss, one must have already begun to climb." You arrive late on the scene as the prophet. It's about fucking time.

With your bladder ready to burst and Armageddon mere seconds away, what do you do?

    From Bernie McGinn:
The 90's - Good shows on campus, organized by dave rabe. Duffy's emerges as a consistent place for music featuring lost of touring bands, again with Dave at the helm. Red and Black Cafe.... Shows at the Wagon Train Project (7th St. Loft). Shakes Cafe steps in (probably to its own harm) to do lots of shows as well, providing a breeding ground for all sorts of fun stuff. The band room at kinckerbocker's opens up - its great to have a place that is doing shows most nights of the week - and let's me bring in all ages matinee shows.

From Eric Hallstrom: They did their national tour the summer of 1992, because Water patterned our tour on theirs. I think Filter was coming about during 1993, because Brian was dropping out of the scene. From Kevin Gregorius: Slide had two releases -- one in 1991, one in 1992 (with the opening/closing being the announcers recorded from the Big Red Rock-O-Rama). Slide originally had four members: Nate something or other was a vocalist who left not terribly long after the first cassette came out. There was one issue of Duff Stuff where bands voted on their favorite bands – Roosevelt Franklin picked Slide.

The nucleus of the Band was John Carlini, and Mark Harper who were the Lenin and McCartney (so to speak of the band). Carlini, and Kuberski were true jazz heads, and Sistek was a great percussionist with a firm understanding of all kinds of music. Harper was not a GREAT player persay, but he was a rather interesting performer. His feature songs were: "I wanna be Like BB King", I dreamed I was a woman" We played almost entirely all original music.

Carlini wrote a tune called "Coffee" , that had us sounding a bit like talking heads, amongst others. But our sound was quite full and .. .quite unique.

Eric Shanks was actually the manager of the band, and he also ran around on stage as we allowed it. He was not that musical.

I was the Bass player and was not that great or shitty. My role was to mediate all the varying and eccentric personalities.

I think our first gig was at the Student Union. Then, thereafter we played at the famous Drumstick a few times. We also played other parties and stuff I probably don't remember

I was working at "Waterbed World" on about 19th and O and the guys (Carlini & Kuberski) came in and fired me to be replaced by John Link (a far better musician than I was). Shortly thereafter, I was also fired from Waterbed World for sleeping behind the cash register. - Martin Pugh

From Harry Dingman: S.G.P.W. would cover the stage with dead tree limbs use bright white lights and play melodic industrial sounding songs that were so loud you could hardly be in the same room with them. Also their fog machine emitted toxic smoke- if the music didn't get you their fog certainly would! They released one great cassette.

From Matt Silcock: Existed well before I was in -- in fact, Tom used to play solo shows where he would sing and play live drums along with backing tapes, then get out from behind the drums and sing and dance to live backing tapes. We also won the Homer's Kiss-off where bands did Kiss covers, and got our picture in Billboard magazine!

Bernie McGinn on bands he misses seeing play...
I miss Opium Taylor. If they would have stuck it out a bit longer, they would have found their place, and would have been one of those bands you hear other bands from across the country cite as an inspiration.

From Dave Sullivan: We were popular in Lincoln, and barely played out of town. The shows were pretty messy, with lots of chatter between songs and gags and horseplay. It was fun because though our fans wanted to hear the music, the feeling was more like a party in someones basement. Sent lot’s of demos to labels.

From David Moscovich: I must have been about 18, but somehow managed to write songs which were compelling enough to sustain a small local following, mostly starting in chuck's garage but moving to the Red and Black Cafe -- and -- those are blurry, blurry days for me but as I remember it we played there quite often during the short life of the Red and Black-- the Rred and Black cafe -- some of the other regulars there were Yellow Nut Sedge, Gregory, Liberation Surrealist Duo and of course DJ Corky Nine and the Courdoroy Love Tabernacle Choir!!!!!, they were truly amazing.... it was a temporary autonomous zone a la hakim bey, if you know his writings.

From David Moscovich: short-lived fast-living post-punk perhaps power trio. enver and i switched off on guitar and bass. I believe he wrote most of the songs. We played mostly a few shows that were literally underground -- after hours gigs underneath the haymarket in some dusty old warehouse near bluestem books --- we did run a helluva moonshine racket out of that place and provided last callers with some place to go and listen to music -- we rented a storage space there we used for band practices -- who knows now it probably is used for bands -- this was back in 1996-7 i believe, shortly before I moved west. 1

From Michael Farrar: No releases, but I recorded every practice session - many of which we edited down, gave titles to and gave out to friends.

Jim Feurholzer and I worked together with Hiedi Ore, John Taylor, Bob Crisler, and Mike Davis (as well as many others from the indie art scene) at a strange place doing Yellow Pages phone books. I can't remember what Jim's previous band was called - but I do remember that they'd put out a 7" demo and had a track that got played on local radio from time to time. Jim was attending UNL working on a post graduate degree in psychology - and he was also one of the more notable of local artists. Keat had been around during the Brickyard and Malone center days, playing drums whenever anybody would let him (I think he played a couple of shows, unofficially, with Hymn To Joy). The only time that we played outside of Keats basement was at a "demolition party". I forget the address (and since it's been over 10 years since I've even been in Lincoln I couldn't even guess what street it's on) but it was a small four or six unit apartment building that ended up being torn down and a small law/attorney office went up in it's place. Many of the people that lived there were coworkers/friends and since their leases had terminated and they were essentially being kicked out they decided to throw a party on the last night they were allowed to be there. What better place to throw as wild of a party as possible than a place that was going to be torn down in a couple of days? So - we set up shop in one of the up-stairs units and cranked the amps. A good time was had - many windows and walls were broken - many visits by the police (who ended up hanging out listening to us play for a while - yes, there are occasionally some cool cops).

The band was at one time called Sometime October since my birthday is Oct. 10th, Jim's is Oct. 11th, and Keat's is Oct. 12th. It later changed to Weird Beards when all three of us attempted to grow beards at the same time (or planning - just coincidence) and yet not really being able to (they were kind of scraggly and spotted). Sheri Shwarz (girlfriend of local jazz pianist John Carlini) who we worked with commented that our beards were "weird". This was when the David Lynch version of Dune had just come out and Jim was fascinated by the "weirding way" in the movie. We did some dictionary digging to find out that 'weird' can be used to pertain to the occult or supernatural and that the word 'beard' can be used as a term of defiance. So, in light of those definitions, Weird Beards stuck.

We were loud and noisy and completely unpredictable - almost never played the same thing the same way twice and known to go off on 20 - 30 minute jams. Jim described it best as Bauhaus meets The Fuzz Tones meets Metallica. Or in other words - we were pretty sloppy and not very good - but it was a lot of fun.

Jim quit to focus on his studies and eventually moved to Chicago. Keat and I somehow hooked up with John Fynbu (Hymn To Joy, Four Against One) and then later recruited Steve Case (owner of Project Imports record store - one of the first shops to open in the Berkholder Project in the Haymarket) to play drums and form Fish Box.

Eric Medley owns/runs Tremulant Records, formerly known as Fire Records, which was responsible for co-releasing the Linoma Comps of the 90's which documented many of the great bands of that era. Eric is also a producer/engineer at his own studio, and frequently records bands at Presto Studio as well. It's hard to find an album recorded in Lincoln between say 1985 and 1999 that doesn't have Eric's name in the credits in some capacity or another.

From Eric Medley: The label i've been running since 1990, now called Tremulant Records, was called Fire records before 1996. I had to make the name change due to a new upstart by MCA that used the "fire" name. They threatened me with legal action so I changed the name and registered it, hopefully avoiding such problems in the future.

From The Nebraska Hall of Fame site: In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus) was released in 1968 on the Truth label and picked up the following year by RCA Records, climbing to number 1, where it remained for six weeks in the US charts and three weeks in the UK, topping acts such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, CCR, and Blood, Sweat, & Tears, ultimately selling a reported five million copies.

From Mojo Magazine: Once heard and never forgotten, Zager & Evans' sanctimonious "In The Year 2525" posited a future that sounded all to plausible in the Future Shock-obsessed late '60's: machines would oust people from the workplace, artificial insemination becomes the norm, God wonders if his createion has outstayed its welcome.

This cheery little number had been written in 1964 by Lincoln, Nebraska's RIck Evans, then a member of The Eccentrics, Denny Zager, another ex-Eccentric, hooked up with Evans again in 1968. Added to the duo's live act, 2525 was the standout song in an otherwise country-influenced set. They recorded it and pressed 1,000 copies on the Truth label. "We marketed it ourselve", explains Zager from his Nebraska home. "We were working at a nightclub that was buying radio time to advertise. We gave them a snippet of 2525 to use for the ad. People started calling the station, asking for the whole song. It caught on in Omaha, then the West Coast." RCA sighed the duo in early June 1969. A Month later, Zager & Evans' climb up the charts. But 2525 raised expectations to impossible levels: "The record was so hyped that when we performed, they thought we would be bigger than life, but we were just normal entertainers." Finding a striking followup was a tough call, so RCA issued Evans' Mr. Turnkey, a maudlin jail-cell ballad, that couldn't compare with 2525. It missed out on charts everywhere. "We got lucky with '25, it was the timing," said Zager, "You can only stay on top for so long. It happens and then it's gone."

From Bart Beckers "Till The Cows Come Home" (regarding the song Mr. "Turnkey") - It's a sickie about a boy in prison for rape; he describes his victim's beauty, his self-hatred, and then we discover that he's nailed himself to the cell wall and is hanging there bleeding to death.

From Bart Beckers "Till The Cows Come Home" - 2525 It was released on the local Truth label. Within about 30 minutes after KLMS began airing the tune, all 1000 copies were sold out of Lincoln record stores. In 3 weeks it had sold over 11,000 copies regionally and opportunistic RCA grabbed a hold of the rocket around mid June.
